April 28-29 at the Augusta Civic Center was a great success! VOAD had an inside booth promoting our members. Ready Freddy even showed up for a visit on Friday during lunch. Our members go a chance to show of some of their capabilities as well in a display we called "circle the wagons". Two muck out trailers, a shower trailer, Red Cross IRV, Salvation Army canteen, mobile food "pantry", and volunteer processing trailer were all on display in the parking lot. We are excited to see how we can promote our members next year as we partner to prepare for the unexpected.

It's become a tradition this time of year for Maine VOAD partners to get together and glean broccoli at Smiths Farms in Presque Isle. Broccoli is donated to Good Shepherd Food-Bank and other VOAD partners and distributed to food pantries and soup kitchens across the state.
Please consider lending a hand Wednesday, September 15 (Rain Date: Thursday, Sept. 16) The more volunteers we have, the more broccoli is gleaned for people in need. Learn more about hunger in Maine at www.gsfb.org.
Itinerary: 6am - Partners from the south can meet at Dysarts Trucking in Hermon to Caravan north. 9am - Arrive at Presque Isle area at 9am (Andy from Smiths Farm will advise us of the field location two days before) 12pm - Approximate time for lunch. Food and drinks provided. 1-3pm - Approximate end time. Hopefully approx 12 -16 skids will be picked and be at the packing plant around 2-3pm for GSFB to pickup and distribute statewide through their warehouses in Auburn, Brewer and Portland. If you are interested in picking or need more information please contact Bob Van Deventer at 487-1199 or email bobvnert@uninets.net |

By now you have all heard about the tragedy that is unfolding in
Haiti in the wake of the 7.0-magnitude
earthquake.
While Maine VOAD is focused on local emergency response and disaster recovery, we
should all recognize and applaud the efforts of our fellow non-profit,
non-governmental, and faith-based organizations that are responding at this
very moment. Many of these organizations are members of our national affiliate, National Voluntary
Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD). NVOAD is
working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and InterAction, an
organization that supports the coordination of international nonprofits,
humanitarian relief organizations, and the Center for International Disaster
Information.
If you're looking for
opportunities to help the victims of the earthquake, we recommend visiting the following sites to see how you can help: NVOAD MEMA InterAction The

Maine VOAD is very excited to announce that we have obtained 501(c)3 tax-exempt status from the IRS. The IRS grants this coveted status upon organizations that meet specific legal requirements and operate under strict conditions with the goal of providing a public benefit.
This tax status makes Maine VOAD exempt from paying federal taxes and allows any donations to be a tax deduction for the donor. This status will also open doors for grant opportunities from foundations and the government.
This is a wonderful milestone in the development of Maine VOAD. |

"Our entire emergency management team has a role to play when it comes to preparing for and responding to the next disaster," said Administrator Fugate. "One of the most important parts of that team is the public. The more prepared the public is now, by getting an emergency response kit, making an emergency action plan, and getting a skill, like CPR, the stronger our emergency response team will be."
-The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate
September is National Preparedness Month. Consider registering on VolunteerMaine.org as a volunteer responder to disasters. Take a first aid class with Red Cross in your area. Check out other resources at Ready.gov.
Hurricane season is ramping up. Winter is approaching. There's always a chance of a fire. Help mitigate the damage and distress by preparing during September, National Preparedness Month.
#Update: Coincidentally, September also happens to be Hunger Action Month. Learn more about it at our partner, Good Shepherd Food-Bank's website. |

August 27, 2009 colleagues, friends and peers gathered together to celebrate the career of Darla Chafin who is retiring from her long service with Maine Emergency Management. Darla has been an instrumental ally in the organization of Maine VOAD and members of the coalition presented her with a certificate of appreciation.
We join the other attendees of Darla's retirement party, as well as the hundreds - if not thousands - of people she's touched in expressing our deepest gratitude for her work and commitment in the state of Maine especially with respect to her efforts in emergency management.
We wish the best for her and a well deserved retirement. |
